‘With Orca’ hydrogen fuelled bulk carrier receives AiP from LR
Less than a year ago Egil Ulvan Rederi with support from Norwegian Ship Design won a tender among 31 bidders to build and operate a zero-emission hydrogen fuelled bulk cargo vessel on behalf of Heidelberg Cement and Felleskjøpet Agri. Today, on March 1, it was announced that the vessel had received Approval in Principle (AiP) from Lloyd’s Register.
In contrary to traditional rule-based ship design, the approval of hydrogen powered vessels is according to an alternative design process, in which it must be documented by risk and safety studies that the vessel has a highly tolerable safety level which is at least equivalent to that of similar modern vessels using conventional fuels (e.g. diesel). Both dispersion studies and explosion risk assessments are expected in the approval process.
HYEX Safety has supported this very interesting and innovative project for more than a year related to hydrogen safety advice and risk assessments. We are excited with the award of AiP and are looking forward to a continued cooperation.
